What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are placed on your computer by websites when visiting them, where they remain stored, waiting to be sent back to the same site on your next visit to it. Third-party cookies, on the other hand, are set-up by third-party websites different from the one you, as a user, are visiting. It should be pointed out, for your protection, that a cookie cannot retrieve any other type of data from your hard drive, nor transmit viruses or acquire email addresses.
Types of cookies and their function
Cookies can be divided into two main types: so-called “technical” cookies and “profiling” ones.
The former are those used to carry out fast executions of computer authentications while maintaining user identification within the session, as well as to enable secure browsing. For these purposes, this type of cookie is not stored over time on the user’s PC, but rather, vanishes the moment the browser is closed. Based on the Data Protection Authority Guidelines of June 10, 2021, it is permitted to use such cookies without the data subject’s consent. The latter ones, on the other hand, are those used to track a user’s web browsing behaviour and profile user tastes, habits and choices, in order to propose more targeted offers.
According to the aforementioned measure and pursuant to EU Reg. 679/2016, the installation of such cookies can only take place if the user expressly consents to it after having firstly been informed about it, including in a simplified manner.
