Aloe is a succulent plant with characteristically thick and fleshy leaves with small spikes running along their edges. The dry extract of this plant is a (200:1) concentrate of powdered leaf pulp, rich in vitamins, mineral salts and amino acids – a true phytocomplex. The wide variety of substances it contains is the foundation of the product’s health-enhancing properties, making it useful as an anti-inflammatory for the gastrointestinal mucosae, an immunostimulant – thanks to the presence of acemannan, as a detoxifier and more. Numerous clinical trials have been conducted on its topical use as a gel and its oral use in capsule form. The only warning concerns Aloin. A substance found in the outer part of the leaf, which has laxative and irritant properties on the colon. At a daily dose of 1 g or more, it can cause diarrhoea, abdominal pain and physical weakness. Given that the dry extract is sourced from the leaf pulp, it does not contain Aloin, making the product safe.

Bergamot orange is a citrus plant belonging to the Rutaceae family. The fruit is the part typically used in phytotherapeutics, due to its high polyphenol content – especially flavonoids. Helping to combat atherosclerosis thanks to their cholesterol lowering, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Its ability to lower triglycerides and “bad cholesterol” LDL levels and increase “good cholesterol” HDL levels is due to the structure of two flavonoids in particular, whose activity is similar to that of statins – cholesterol-lowering prescription drugs. They inhibit the action of a liver enzyme, HMG-CoA reductase, which is responsible for cholesterol production. Unlike statins, however, bergamot doesn’t cause muscle pain and therefore ideally suited as a safe alternative for cholesterol lowering therapy.

Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme contained in pineapple – its concentration is measured in proteolytic units. Bromelain, is used medicinally as an anti-inflammatory and antioedemic. Bromelain is safer than other anti-inflammatories due to differences in the action mechanism. NSAIDs inhibit cyclooxygenase, blocking prostaglandin synthesis, while bromelain “diverts” the synthesis, increasing the production of anti-inflammatory prostaglandin to the detriment of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins, thus preventing gastrointestinal damage typically caused by NSAIDs.

Broccoli is a plant belonging to the Brassicaceae family. Rich in vitamins A, C and K, and Mineral salts such as potassium, iron, phosphorous, calcium and sulphur – responsible for its characteristic cooking smell. There is one substance in particular that is obtained from broccoli sprouts, sulforaphane, which has aroused great interest due to its high antioxidant activities, strong enough to protect every cell from any sort of oxidative or inflammatory damage. In fact, Sulforaphane activates a large number of enzymes that play a role in cellular redox reactions and at a genetic level – regulates endogenous detoxification mechanisms. For this reason, it has been studied in numerous clinical cases. In pulmonary diseases, Sulforaphane has been shown to increase the broncho-protective activities of other natural agents. In digestive diseases where there is a high degree of oxidative stress in the gastrointestinal mucosae, like infections caused by Helicobacter pylori or those caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, Sulforaphane has been shown, both in vitro and in vivo, to have good antibacterial activity. Thus effective against Helicobacter pylori, as well as playing a cytoprotective role in cases of drug-induced gastritis.

Meadowsweet is a plant belonging to the Rosaceae family, known for its anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties. Its phytocomplex contains salicylic derivatives (salicylaldehyde, methyl salicylate, ethyl salicylate), flavonoids, vitamin C, essential oils and mineral salts. Meadowsweet has anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and fever-reducing activity, because it inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins (PGE2), which are responsible for pain and for the tissues’ inflammatory process. For this reason, it is called the “vegetable aspirin” along with willow. However, unlike synthetic anti-inflammatories, it is not ulcerogenic (does not cause gastritis or ulcers), since the presence of mucilage gives meadowsweet a protective effect on the mucosae, capable of reducing cramping and erosion of the gastric lining.

Saw palmetto is a plant belonging to the Arecaceae family. The active constituents contained in its fruit are sterols (beta-sitosterols), free fatty acids, carotenoids, essential oils and polysaccharides. Its phytocomplex mechanism of action is reliant on the beta-sitosterol activity – inhibiting the 5-alpha H-reductase enzyme, which plays a role in transforming testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. The plant therefore has an effect on the prostate tissue cells, limiting cell proliferation causing the prostate to enlarge and become inflamed. This congestion and volume increase puts pressure on the bladder and compresses the urethra, making it more difficult to urinate as well as stimulating the urge to urinate more frequently. Beneficial when treating male urogenital system diseases, and stage-1 and stage-2 benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) – where urinary symptoms and “dysuria” predominate.

Stevia is a native South American plant, its leaves frequently used as a beverage sweetener thanks to stevioside and rebaudioside glycosides. These glycosides can’t be absorbed by the human body nor attacked by the oral bacterial flora, they have no nutritional value and do not increase blood glucose levels. Making it highly suitable for diabetics. In the large intestine, they are metabolised into steviol, the main aglycone – which is expelled as glucuronide in the urine, following a slight absorption. Furthermore, stevia leaves keep blood cholesterol levels stable, are calorie free and adjuvants for many types of programmes such as weight loss plans, as well as tonifying, stomachic, hypoglycemic, hypotensive, antimicrobial and epidermotropic ones. Since 17 June 2017, stevia has been included in the List of Novel Foods and identified as a traditional food.

Hyaluronic acid is a fundamental connective tissue component, especially for skin and mucosae. The amount of this acid produced, decreases with age. Thus, to prevent and to reduce signs of aging, the fragmented plant-derived active constituent can be used in both oral and topical formulations. This active constituent is an effective antioxidant, especially when considering tissue damage is made worse by free radicals because of inflammation. In fact, it works at the cells’ genetic level, increasing the expression of TGF-1, a mediator that stimulates the migration, metabolism and proliferation of fibroblasts and keratinocytes – the cells that carry out cell repair.

Sulforaphane is a compound naturally occurring in plants belonging to the Cruciferae family, such as broccoli. A molecule possessing high antioxidant properties, strong enough to protect every cell from any sort of oxidative or inflammatory damage. Sulforaphane activates a large number of enzymes that play a role in cellular redox reactions and at a genetic level – regulates endogenous detoxification mechanisms.

Tolu balsam is a sap-like substance exuded when an incision is made in the bark of the South American tree, Myroxylon balsamum. The oleoresin obtained this way is defined as a balsam thanks to its dual properties. “Soothing” and skin protective in case of burns, insect bites and ulcers and “therapeutic” on the respiratory system in cases of dry or wet coughs. The essential oils it contains make this product an extremely effective expectorant and antispasmodic.
