FREE RADICALS, ANTIOXIDANTS AND THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

RADICALI LIBERI, ANTIOSSIDANTI E SISTEMA IMMUNITARIO
by Dr Giorgia Baraldo, Biologist and R&D Product Specialist at NATURALSALUS

Free radicals and antioxidants are often discussed in relation to the immune system. Let’s clarify a few concepts to help you understand them better and offer some advice for a natural wellness routine.

 What are free radicals?

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that occur naturally through the action of light, heat or as by-products of chemical reactions.

The cells in our bodies also produce free radicals, especially during metabolic reactions and periods of stress. Their reactivity is due to an unpaired electron carried by these molecules. As a result, they can react with other molecules and alter their structure and function.

The problem mainly arises when the concentration of free radicals to which our bodies are exposed is too high or when exposure lasts too long. Under these circumstances, free radicals can damage cells and tissues.

How does our body defend itself against free radicals?

Because these molecules are so common, the human body has developed defence systems, such as glutathione and SOD, to counteract the potential damage free radicals can cause to cellular structures.

Why is it important to support detoxification and protect our bodies from free radicals?

Our cells are constantly exposed to free radicals, which can come from external sources, such as the environment in which we live, or from internal sources. Some cells, in particular, produce them as part of normal physiological processes.

Our wellness recommendation: a natural detox and antioxidant programme.

To help the body detoxify and provide suitable support against free radicals, NATURALSALUS offers the formulationsIS1 ANTOXI PLUSand IS2 ANTOXI PLUS FLUID. Both products contain plants with important antioxidant components that perform different but complementary functions.

A detox product is the first step.

The detox programme begins with IS2 ANTOXI PLUS FLUID. Its formula contains a high concentration of Broccoli sprouts, which contain sulforaphane or Sulforaphane, a molecule that can activate phase II cellular antioxidant enzymes. This effect helps naturally counter free-radical activity. It also has an apoptotic effect on damaged cells. Moringa oleifera, a plant known as a superfood, also contains high concentrations of vitamins C and E and carotenoids, in addition to polyphenols.  Polygonum multiflorum, also called He Shou Wu, is a legendary Chinese plant surrounded by myths and beliefs. It contains high concentrations of polyphenols and stilbenes, known for their antioxidant action. It also has tonic and energising effects.  Schisandra is a berry notable for releasing all five flavours when tasted. It is best known for its cleansing, antioxidant and restorative properties. Sea buckthornSea Buckthorn contains a high concentration of vitamin C and carotenoids, further helping protect the body from free radicals through its antioxidant effect.

An antioxidant product to enhance immune defence and anti-ageing support.

To complete the antioxidant action, NATURALSALUS has created IS1 ANTOXI PLUS. It also contains Polygonum multiflorum, also called He Shou Wu, a plant favoured in traditional Eastern medicine. UnlikeANTOXI PLUS FLUID , sulforaphane or sulforaphane is present in powder form, at a higher concentration, complementing the effect initiated by broccoli sprouts. In addition, sodium hyaluronate supports the absorption of active ingredients and improves skin hydration and elasticity, leaving it soft. Finally, resveratrol, a molecule found in high concentrations in grape skins, acts as a powerful antioxidant and further protects body cells from free radicals.  Resveratrol has also been the subject of extensive research into its effect on cellular ageing. This molecule interacts with a group of proteins called sirtuins, which, once activated, can counter the onset of premature cellular ageing. Therefore, thanks to the presence of sodium hyaluronateandresveratrol, this product not only supports detoxification but also acts as a functional cosmetic, offering several skin benefits by making it more elastic and more resilient to the stress caused by free radicals.

Expert advice: when to start and how to take the products.

The first step involvesIS2 ANTOXI PLUS FLUID*, for detoxification and liver cleansing (10 mldaily before breakfast, until the bottle is finished).

After this first step, move on to addressing free radicals. TakeIS1 ANTOXI PLUS* (2 capsules a day, preferably in the morning before breakfast). Continue taking IS1 ANTOXI PLUS for 60 days.

Stop for 1 month.

Then repeat the entire programme.

Repeating this IS2 + IS1 programme three times a year helps maintain immune-system well-being and function.

During seasonal changes, from March to June and from November to February, seasonal discomfort may be prevented with the help ofIS3 MIRABILUS IMMUNO PLUS (10 ml twice a day).

*Both IS1 and IS2 contain a very important active ingredient, sulforaphane, which we extract from broccoli sprouts. However, it has contraindications for people who suffer from certain conditions; consult the full product information before use.
